Central Lenin Stadium now called as Luzhniki stadium was opened in 1956. It is located in Khamovniki District  of Moscow, the Russian capital . Luzhniki means the “The Medows”

Capacity

The stadium has a capacity of 81,000 seats; Luzhniki Stadium is the biggest stadium in Russia and in Eastern Europe. The stadium stands on 15th position of world’s largest Soccer stadiums.

Major Events

The First historical moment for Luzhniki stadium was being the host for the 1980 Olympics, where the opening and closing ceremonies were held along with some Olympics events like athletics and football final taken place.

In 1999, UEFA final between France and Italy, followed by UEFA Champions League Final in 2008 between Chelsea and Manchester United were also taken place at Luzhniki Stadium

Disaster

In the year 1982 was the time when Luzhniki had to face a big disaster during the UEFA cup match, resulted in the death of 66 people by the panic created leading to a stampede.

Renovation

The renovation took place in 1996, previously the roofless stadium could accommodate 100,000 viewers, but after, the seating capacity was reduced to 81,000 as the seating areas were reconditioned.

FIFA 2018

Luzhniki stadium has come to the most awaited historical moment, where it will be served as the host for the FIFA world cup 2018. The starting match, a match in Round of 16, a semifinal match and the final match will be held here.
