Club History

Russia comes into the 2018 World Cup ranked 63rd in the FIFA World Rankings. The hosts did not have to qualify for the tournament, which could greatly hurt the sides play during the World Cup. Russia hasn’t played a competitive match since the Euro 2016 tournament, and the team’s 3-0 loss to Brazil on March 23 shows the team isn’t ready for the elite national football teams in the world. The good news for Russia is Group A is wide-open and Stanislav Cherchesov’s team can qualify for the knockout round. Most of Cherchesov’s squad are made up of domestic players. Captain Igor Akinfeev has been a consistent performer for the national team. The goalkeeper has over 100 caps for Russia and the side will need his leadership, if it wants to go deep into the 2018 World Cup tournament.
