The national football team of Egypt is one of the best African teams at the moment. After an amazing qualification campaign that ended with an amazing last home game in front of more than 80 000 people, the Egyptians are ready to prove themselves at the stadiums in Russia. This will be the third World Cup for the Africans that still had not won a game at the World Cup in their history. The Pharaohs has a pretty decent potential and they should be able to achieve a first win at the World Cups in their history. Anyways, this should not be the only task in front of a team that has a superstar player like Mohamed Salah. Moreover, the group in which the Pharaohs are settled at the World Cup (Saudi Arabia, Russia and Uruguay) is a group that gives to the Africans a lot of chances for good results.
HEAD COACH AND LINEUP
Egypt is led by the famous Argentinean coach Hector Cuper. The 62-year-old Argentinean has a vast experience with teams all over the world. He had coached plenty of Argentinean club teams, but his best years as a coach had been in teams like Mallorca, Valencia, Inter, Real Betis and Parma. In 2015, Egypt hired Cuper as head coached and his work had been spectacular since that moment. The Argentinean created an amazing team with great team chemistry. Hector Cuper relies highly on defense (affected by the fact that when he was a player, he was a defender) and for this reason, Egypt is fairly solid in this part of the game.
Evidence for that is the results of Egypt during qualifications and the good results in the friendly games, registered by the Africans. The last great example that proves the power and the potential of Egypt was the exhibition game of the Pharaohs in Portugal against the current European champions. The Egyptians lost this game with 2-1, but they were leading during the whole game and if it was not for the magic of Cristiano Ronaldo, they would have won this game. The real question for Egypt is if the team only relies on Mo Salah?
At the goalie position, the key player for the Africans is the oldest player that will participate in the World Cup – Essam El-Hadary (45 years old). He might not start in all games, but he is the ‘’heart’’ of this Egyptian team. His passion and desire for winning will be valuable inside and outside the field.
As we talked about few sentences ago, Egypt relies heavily on defense. For this reason, it is important for Egyptian fans to see great defenders in their squad. Egypt has few interesting defenders, but the key player in this line is Ahmed Hegazi who plays for WBA in England. Another player from the Premier League is vital for the Egyptian performance as a team. Mohamed El Neny is the most important player in the midfield line of the Pharaohs. The midfielder of Arsenal never gets tired and he is the connection between the defenders and the strikers of Egypt. Without a doubt, the key player on offense for the Africans is Mohamed Salah. Matter of fact, he is the key player in the whole team not only on offense. The superstar of the world’s football is having the best season of his life and everyone in Egypt expects great things from him at the World Cup.
STRENGTHS & WEAKNESSES
The weakness of Egypt is the fact that the team heavily relies on Mo Salah. No one in Egypt wants to confess this fact, but this is the reality. If the teammates of Salah are able to perform on a good level at the World Cup then the team might achieve something great. On the other side, the strength of Egyptians can be found in the team chemistry. The Egyptians have problems with the class of most of its players, but they try to overcome this problem with a great team chemistry and great team help. It will be interesting to see if the team chemistry can beat the limited talent and class of some players. Do not get this wrong! Egypt has good players but surely they are not as good as the players of most of the nations that will be at the World Cup.
